"Africa in miniature" — rainforest, savanna, volcano and desert in one country.

The "Africa in miniature" label is a tourism-board line that happens to be justified: Cameroon runs from Atlantic rainforest through volcanic highlands and savanna to the Sahelian edge of Lake Chad. Mount Cameroon is an active volcano and the highest peak in West Africa at 4,040 metres, climbable in two or three days from Buea. The Ring Road in the northwest loops through grassfields kingdoms with palaces and traditional authority that still function.

Two serious complications shape any trip. The Anglophone crisis in the Northwest and Southwest regions has produced an armed conflict since 2017, and the Far North faces Boko Haram incursions — both carry advisories against travel from most governments, and both contain major attractions. What remains accessible is substantial: Douala, Yaoundé, the western highlands around Foumban and Dschang, Kribi's beaches and the southeastern rainforest. Check current advice carefully before fixing an itinerary.

Highlights

01

Mount Cameroon

West Africa's highest peak and an active volcano — a two- to three-day climb from Buea through rainforest, grassland and lava fields. The annual Race of Hope runs to the summit and back in under five hours.

02

Foumban and the western highlands

The Bamoun sultan's palace and museum at Foumban, brass and bead workshops, and the cool volcanic highlands around Dschang and the Bamenda grassfields.

03

Kribi

Atlantic beaches where the Lobé river falls directly into the sea, with fishing villages and grilled prawns along the shore south of Douala.

04

Waza and the north

Sahelian savanna park with elephant, giraffe and lion, plus the volcanic Rhumsiki peaks in the Mandara mountains. Both are in the Far North region, which currently carries a travel advisory.

Yaoundé and the centre

The hill capital, the Mefou primate sanctuary and the forested route east.

The western highlands

The north

Ngaoundéré, Garoua, Bénoué and Waza's savanna wildlife, with the Mandara mountains beyond — advisories apply in the Far North.

Dja reserve, Lobéké and Boumba Bek — Congo basin forest with lowland gorillas, forest elephants and Baka communities.

Practical guide

Getting there

Douala is the main gateway with Air France, Brussels Airlines, Turkish, Ethiopian, Royal Air Maroc and Kenya Airways; Yaoundé Nsimalen takes fewer international flights. Land borders with Gabon, Equatorial Guinea, Chad and Nigeria are open but conditions vary.

Getting around

Camrail runs the Douala–Yaoundé and Yaoundé–Ngaoundéré lines, the latter overnight with sleepers and the practical route north. Long-distance buses cover the main corridors. Bush taxis and moto-taxis fill in locally. Camair-Co flies domestically but unreliably.

Money & costs

The CFA franc is pegged to the euro. Cash dominates; ATMs work in Douala, Yaoundé and larger towns. Cards are accepted at top hotels only. Mobile money is widely used locally.

Safety

Region-specific. Douala and Yaoundé have street crime, especially after dark. The Northwest, Southwest, Far North and eastern border areas carry conflict advisories. Roadblocks are common everywhere; carry your passport and a yellow fever certificate.

Health

Yellow fever certificate mandatory for entry. Malaria year-round nationwide. Cholera outbreaks recur in the north. Medical facilities are limited; evacuation insurance is essential.

SIM & internet

MTN, Orange and Camtel; SIM registration requires a passport. 4G in cities and along the main corridors, nothing in the forest and much of the north. Internet shutdowns have been imposed in the Anglophone regions.

Frequently asked questions

Which regions are off-limits?

Governments advise against all travel to the Northwest and Southwest regions because of the Anglophone conflict, and to the Far North because of Boko Haram. Advice on the eastern border with the Central African Republic is similar. That removes Bamenda, Buea and Mount Cameroon, and Waza from a normal itinerary — read the current advisory rather than this paragraph, because the boundaries move.

Is French enough?

French covers eight of the ten regions and all the accessible ones. English is official in the Northwest and Southwest — the two regions currently under advisory. Learning basic French is effectively a requirement for independent travel here.

How do I get the visa?

In advance, at a Cameroonian mission, with a yellow fever certificate, a hotel booking or invitation letter, a return ticket and proof of funds. An e-visa system has been introduced and works for some nationalities. Expect two to four weeks. A yellow fever certificate is separately mandatory at the border.
