Riga has the largest concentration of art nouveau architecture of any city in Europe — around a third of the centre, most of it built in a fifteen-year boom before the First World War, with Alberta iela the street people photograph. The old town alongside it is Hanseatic and compact, and the Central Market occupies five former zeppelin hangars.
Beyond the capital Latvia is forest and coast: half the country is woodland, the Baltic shore runs five hundred kilometres of white sand and pine, and the Gauja valley has castles and sandstone cliffs. The Song and Dance Festival, held every five years, brings tens of thousands of singers together and is the clearest expression of a culture that used choral singing to hold itself together through occupation.
Highlights
Riga's art nouveau quarter
Alberta iela and the streets around it, with facades by Mikhail Eisenstein covered in masks, sphinxes and screaming faces. The Art Nouveau Museum has one apartment restored to period.
The Gauja valley
Sigulda, Turaida's red-brick castle and Cēsis, in a sandstone valley with caves and the country's only real relief. An hour from Riga and the standard escape from it.
Jūrmala and the coast
A twenty-kilometre beach resort of wooden villas half an hour from Riga, and beyond it the Kurzeme coast — Cape Kolka where two seas meet, and Liv fishing villages.
The Song and Dance Festival
Held every five years, with tens of thousands of choral singers in the Riga forest stage. UNESCO-listed and, if the timing works, the single most extraordinary thing in the Baltic calendar.

Riga rises from June to August and around the Christmas market; Jūrmala and the coast fill in July and close for most of the winter. The Song and Dance Festival, every five years, fills the city completely and is worth checking against your dates in either direction. Otherwise prices are steady and among the lower half of the EU.

Practical guide
Getting there
Riga (RIX) is the largest airport in the Baltics with dense European service including airBaltic's regional network. Buses link Tallinn, Vilnius, Warsaw and Kaliningrad. Ferries run to Stockholm. The Rail Baltica project will eventually connect the region by fast train and is not yet running.
Getting around
Buses cover the country and are the practical option; trains serve Jūrmala, Sigulda and a handful of other routes cheaply. Riga has trams, buses and trolleybuses. A car is useful for the Kurzeme coast and the eastern lakes, where public transport is sparse.

Safety
Safe, with pickpocketing and the old-town bar scams the main risks in Riga. Stag-party tourism has left the centre with a slightly rough edge on weekend nights. Outside the capital, crime is very low. Ticks in forests and cold in winter are the environmental risks.

Winter tyres are required from December to March. Rural roads are often gravel and forest wildlife is a real hazard at dawn and dusk. Jūrmala charges a daily entry fee for cars, paid online or at machines, which surprises people driving out from Riga.

Is Riga worth more than a weekend?
Three or four days. The old town is small, the art nouveau quarter takes a morning, the market and the Soviet-era museums another day, and Jūrmala is a half-hour train ride. A week lets you add the Gauja valley and the Kurzeme coast.
What is the story with the Russian-speaking population?
Around a quarter of Latvia's residents are ethnically Russian, concentrated in Riga and the east, and language politics are a live and sensitive domestic issue. For a visitor it is invisible day to day; it is not a topic to raise casually. Since 2022 the relationship with Russia has hardened considerably and the border is effectively closed to tourism.
How cheap is it?
Cheaper than Estonia and roughly level with Lithuania. A restaurant main runs €13–17, a beer €4, a mid-range hotel €70. Riga in summer and during the song festival is the expensive window; the rest of the year and the rest of the country are inexpensive.
