Norfolk Island is a 35-square-kilometre Australian external territory in the Tasman Sea, and its history runs through two brutal convict settlements and then, in 1856, the arrival of the entire population of Pitcairn Island — descendants of the Bounty mutineers and their Tahitian companions, who had outgrown their rock. Around half the current residents descend from them, many surnames are Christian, Quintal, Adams or McCoy, and the Norf'k language mixes eighteenth-century English with Tahitian.
Kingston and Arthur's Vale is UNESCO-listed as part of the Australian Convict Sites, with Georgian military buildings, a prison ruin and a cemetery whose headstones tell the story plainly. The rest of the island is green pasture and Norfolk pines, and the cattle roam free with legal right of way — which sets the driving speed. Self-government was abolished in 2015 and the island brought under New South Wales administration, a decision that remains contested locally.

The Bounty story

Remnant subtropical rainforest with Norfolk pines, tree ferns and endemic birds including the green parrot, brought back from a few dozen individuals. Mount Pitt gives the island-wide view.
Phillip Island
An uninhabited red-earth islet offshore, stripped bare by introduced animals and now slowly revegetating, reached by boat and walked in a half day.

Getting there
Norfolk Island Airport is served by Qantas from Sydney and Brisbane several times a week. Flights are domestic Australian services but the island is a separate biosecurity zone with its own arrival checks.
Getting around
A hire car is essential and is often included with accommodation; the island is small and the roads are quiet. There is no public transport. Bicycles work in the flatter parts.
