Qatar is a peninsula of 11,500 square kilometres with under three million people, most of them not citizens. It spent the 2022 World Cup building infrastructure that a country this size would not otherwise have — a metro, stadiums, hotels — and the result is a place that is unusually easy to visit and increasingly used as a stopover on Qatar Airways routes.
The museums are the reason to stop for more than a night. The Museum of Islamic Art in I. M. Pei's building holds one of the finest collections in the world, and the National Museum in Jean Nouvel's desert-rose structure is a genuinely inventive piece of architecture. Outside Doha there is the Inland Sea at Khor al Adaid, where dunes run into the Gulf, and very little else — which is part of the appeal for a two-day visit.

The National Museum of Qatar
Jean Nouvel's interlocking discs modelled on a desert rose, wrapped around the restored royal palace, telling the country's story from geology to gas.
Souq Waqif
A restored market of mud-rendered lanes with spice, falcon and textile sections, shisha cafés and the falcon hospital. Rebuilt rather than original, and the liveliest place in Doha after dark.
Khor al Adaid
The Inland Sea in the south, where the Gulf reaches into the dunes — a UNESCO-recognised reserve visited by 4WD, usually as a half-day trip with dune driving.

Practical guide
Getting there
Hamad International (DOH) is a major hub with Qatar Airways connecting to most of the world, and the metro reaches central Doha in about twenty minutes. The only land border is with Saudi Arabia, which reopened in 2021 after the blockade; ferries are limited.
Getting around
The Doha Metro is clean, cheap and covers the main sights, with a tram at Lusail. Karwa taxis and Uber are inexpensive. Renting a car is easy and only necessary for the desert and the north. Distances are short — the whole country is under 200 kilometres end to end.

Safety
Extremely safe with very low crime. The considerations are legal — alcohol, drugs, public conduct and photography — and environmental, meaning heat. Summer temperatures make outdoor exposure genuinely dangerous. Road standards are good and driving is orderly by regional standards.

Driving
Roads are excellent and speed cameras are everywhere with no tolerance. Dune driving to the Inland Sea requires a proper 4WD, deflated tyres and experience — do it with an operator rather than alone, which is both the rule and the sensible course.

Is a stopover enough?
Two days covers the museums, the souq and the corniche properly, which is what most people want. Qatar Airways markets discounted stopover packages, and the metro from the airport makes a short stop genuinely easy. Add a day for Khor al Adaid if the desert is the draw.
What are the conduct rules?
More conservative than the UAE and less than Saudi Arabia. Modest dress covering shoulders and knees is expected in public and requested at museums and malls. Alcohol is served in licensed hotel venues only and is expensive; public drinking and drunkenness are offences. Same-sex relations are criminalised in law. Photographing people without consent is an offence taken seriously.
How expensive is it?
High. A mid-range hotel runs €120–160, a restaurant main €20–28, a beer €12. The metro is cheap and the museums are inexpensive or free, which offsets some of it. Summer rates drop sharply because it is 45 °C outside.
