Rwanda is a country of about 26,000 square kilometres in which almost everything is uphill. The terraced hillsides are farmed to the ridgelines, Kigali is famously clean and safe, and the road network is better than anywhere else in the region. It is easy to underestimate how much this changes travel: you can be at the gorilla park headquarters two and a half hours after leaving the capital, on tarmac, without incident.
The two poles of a Rwandan trip are the Volcanoes National Park in the northwest, where habituated mountain gorilla families are tracked on foot, and the Kigali Genocide Memorial, which is not optional if you want to understand anything about the country. Between them are Nyungwe's montane rainforest with chimpanzees and a canopy walk, and Lake Kivu's quiet shoreline towns. A week is enough; the gorilla permit will dominate the budget.
Highlights
Gorilla trekking in Volcanoes National Park
One hour with a habituated mountain gorilla family on the slopes of the Virunga volcanoes. Groups are capped at eight people, permits are limited daily and the trek can take anywhere from one to six hours each way.
Kigali Genocide Memorial
The resting place of more than 250,000 victims and the clearest account of 1994 you will find. Free entry with a paid audio guide; allow two to three hours and expect to need the rest of the day.
Nyungwe Forest
Montane rainforest in the southwest with chimpanzee tracking, thirteen primate species, over 300 bird species and a 70-metre-high canopy walkway strung across a ravine.
Lake Kivu
The quiet inland sea on the DRC border — Gisenyi, Kibuye and Cyangugu, with a marked cycling and hiking trail, the Congo Nile Trail, running the length of the shore.

Practical guide
Getting there
Kigali International is well connected by RwandAir plus Brussels Airlines, Qatar, Turkish, Ethiopian and KLM. Overland links to Uganda (Gatuna) and Tanzania (Rusumo) are straightforward; the DRC crossing at Gisenyi/Goma depends entirely on the current security situation.
Getting around
Comfortable inter-city coaches on excellent tarmac connect all the main towns cheaply. Moto-taxis are the default in Kigali — helmets provided, fares now metered through apps. Renting a 4x4 is worth it only for Akagera.

Safety

Speed limits are low and speed cameras are widespread and actually used. Roads are winding, in good condition and busy with pedestrians and cyclists — the hazard is people, not surface.

How much is a gorilla permit and can I get one on the day?
A permit costs US$1,500 per person for foreign non-residents, covers one hour with a family and must be booked in advance through the Rwanda Development Board or a tour operator. Daily numbers are strictly capped, so high season sells out months ahead. If the price is the obstacle, Uganda's permits are less than half as much for the same species.
Is Rwanda safe?
Very — violent crime against visitors is rare and Kigali is safer at night than most European capitals. The exception is the DRC border area around Goma, where conditions change quickly; check advisories before travelling to the far west and do not cross into North Kivu on a whim.
Are plastic bags really banned?
Yes, and it is enforced at the airport. Single-use plastic bags are confiscated on arrival, including the ones your duty-free came in. Pack fabric or paper. The same civic strictness produces Umuganda, a compulsory community clean-up on the last Saturday of each month when most businesses close until midday.
