Saint Vincent and the Grenadines is really two trips wearing one flag. The mainland, St Vincent, is the wild part: black-sand coves, rainforest waterfalls and La Soufrière, the 1,234 m volcano that erupted as recently as 2021 and whose crater hike is the country’s great land adventure. Then the Grenadines unspool southward — thirty-odd islands and cays scattered across some of the clearest sailing water in the Atlantic world.
Each island has its own temperament. Bequia, an hour’s ferry from Kingstown, balances yachtie bars with a real boatbuilding town; Mustique does barefoot privacy for rock stars; Canouan splits between fishing village and top-end resorts; and at the chain’s end the uninhabited Tobago Cays sit inside a horseshoe reef where green turtles graze metres from your mask. Hurricane Beryl battered the southern islands in 2024 — going, and spending, is part of how they rebuild.

Practical guide
Getting there
Argyle International (SVD) on St Vincent has a handful of direct US links (Miami, New York) plus regional connections; the classic route from Europe is via Barbados, hopping over on interCaribbean or SVG Air in about 40 minutes. Bequia, Mustique, Canouan and Union Island all have airstrips for island-hoppers. Many visitors simply arrive by sea — Grenadines charters out of Kingstown’s Blue Lagoon or out of Grenada are a standard way to see the country.
Getting around
Ferries are the backbone: Bequia Express and Admiral run Kingstown–Bequia several times daily (about an hour), with slower services down-chain to Canouan, Mayreau and Union Island. SVG Air and Mustique Airways cover the same ground in minutes for modest fares. On St Vincent, shared minivans fan out from Kingstown along both coasts; on the smaller islands you walk, take a water taxi or hop in an open-back pickup cab.

Little troubles visitors beyond opportunistic theft — lock the guesthouse room, keep valuables off the beach and out of dinghies. On boats, follow the charter company’s weather calls without argument. La Soufrière is an active, monitored volcano: check alert levels before hiking, and go with a guide. Hurricane season deserves genuine attention here after Beryl.

Driving
Drive on the left. St Vincent’s leeward road is narrow with sheer drops and hairpins; limits are low, rarely posted and academic on these roads. In the Grenadines you mostly won’t need a car at all — ferries, feet and water taxis do the work.

Is Saint Vincent and the Grenadines safe?
For visitors, broadly yes. The Grenadines in particular are as relaxed as the Caribbean gets; Kingstown asks for ordinary town sense after dark and care with valuables on beaches and boats. The real risks are natural — hurricane season (June–November, worst September–October, as Beryl proved in 2024) and the volcano, which is continuously monitored; heed local guidance on both.
When is the best time to visit?
December to April for dry, settled sailing weather; Vincy Mas, the national carnival, peaks in late June and early July. September and October sit at the top of hurricane season — ferry schedules and small hotels thin out in those weeks, and early-season storms can be severe, as Hurricane Beryl showed in July 2024.
How much does a day cost?
Around €125 (≈ $135) a day mid-range on land — guesthouse double, local restaurants, ferries between islands. Backpackers manage on €60 (≈ $65) on St Vincent and Bequia, where rooms and rotis stay honest.
