Tonga is the only Pacific island nation never brought under foreign rule, and it is still a kingdom — the monarchy retains real constitutional weight and Sunday observance is written into law, which means shops, flights and most activity stop entirely. Swimming and even some hotel services pause. Plan around it rather than fighting it.
The headline experience is swimming with humpback whales. Tonga is one of a small number of places where licensed operators may take snorkellers into the water with mothers and calves, in the Vava'u group from roughly July to October, and it is regulated closely. Beyond that: the Mapu'a 'a Vaea blowholes on Tongatapu firing spray along five kilometres of coast, the ancient Ha'amonga 'a Maui trilithon, and Ha'apai's low sand islands. The 2022 Hunga Tonga eruption and tsunami caused serious damage and reshaped the picture; recovery continues.
Highlights
Swimming with humpback whales
From roughly July to October, licensed operators in Vava'u and Ha'apai take small groups into the water with humpback mothers and calves. Strictly regulated, weather-dependent, and unlike anything else in the Pacific.
Mapu'a 'a Vaea blowholes
On Tongatapu's south coast, seawater forces up through a terrace of coral rock and fires spray twenty metres into the air along about five kilometres of shoreline. Best on a swell.
Ha'amonga 'a Maui
A coral limestone trilithon on Tongatapu, raised around AD 1200, aligned with the solstices — the largest ancient stone structure in the Pacific and the ceremonial centre of the Tu'i Tonga empire.
Vava'u and Ha'apai
Vava'u's sheltered anchorages make it one of the Pacific's best sailing grounds; Ha'apai is flat, sandy, sparsely populated and the quietest group in the kingdom.

Getting there
Fua'amotu near Nuku'alofa is served by Air New Zealand, Fiji Airways and Virgin Australia from Auckland, Nadi and Sydney. Lulutai Airlines flies domestically to Vava'u and Ha'apai.
Getting around
Domestic flights and ferries link the island groups, both with reliability caveats — build buffer days. Tongatapu has buses and hire cars. Within Vava'u, boats do most of the work.

Low crime. The hazards are natural — cyclones from November to April, earthquakes, volcanic activity and tsunami risk. Know the evacuation route from your accommodation. Rough water at reef passes and blowhole coasts.

Left-hand traffic with low limits, and pigs on the road everywhere — they are the most common collision risk on Tongatapu. Driving is prohibited for commercial purposes on Sunday and the roads are largely empty then.

Almost everything. Shops, restaurants outside hotels, domestic flights and most commercial activity are prohibited by law. Swimming is discouraged in some villages. Church, on the other hand, is worth attending for the singing alone — visitors are welcomed if dressed respectfully.
How do I book a whale swim responsibly?
Use a licensed operator — the number of permits is capped and the rules on approach distance, group size and time in the water are enforced. Season runs roughly July to October in Vava'u. Operators book out months ahead in August and September.
What is the situation after the 2022 eruption?
The Hunga Tonga–Hunga Ha'apai eruption and tsunami in January 2022 killed people, destroyed villages on some islands and severed the undersea cable for weeks.
