“A lake with more fish species than any other, and a reputation for friendliness it earns.”
Lake Malawi covers a fifth of the country and holds more freshwater fish species than any other lake on earth — around a thousand cichlids, almost all endemic. The water is clear, bilharzia-managed at the main resorts, and snorkelling among rock-dwelling mbuna is genuinely one of the better freshwater experiences anywhere. Cape Maclear, Nkhata Bay and Likoma Island are where people end up staying longer than planned.
The wildlife story is newer. Malawi's parks were emptied by poaching, and since 2016 African Parks has moved elephants, lions, rhinos and cheetahs into Majete, Liwonde and Nkhotakota in some of the largest translocations ever attempted. The country is small and cheap and the roads are decent, which makes it one of the easier places in the region to travel independently.
Highlights
Lake Malawi
Clear freshwater with hundreds of endemic cichlid species visible in a metre of water. Cape Maclear and Nkhata Bay are the backpacker hubs; Likoma Island, out near the Mozambican shore, has a cathedral the size of Winchester's in a village of a few thousand.
Liwonde National Park
Boat safaris on the Shire river past hippo and elephant, with lions, cheetahs and black rhino reintroduced since 2018. Compact enough to see properly in two days.
Nyika Plateau
Rolling montane grassland at 2,000 metres in the far north — roan antelope, orchids in the rains, leopard, and hiking or mountain biking across country that looks nothing like the rest of Africa.
Mount Mulanje
A granite massif rising abruptly from the tea estates of the south to 3,002 metres, with a network of huts and multi-day traverses. The best trekking in the country.

Regions to know
5The southern lake shore
Cape Maclear, Monkey Bay and Senga Bay — the closest lake to Lilongwe and the busiest stretch.
The northern lake and Likoma
Nkhata Bay, Chintheche and Likoma Island — clearer water, fewer people, the Ilala ferry.
The Shire valley
Liwonde and Majete parks, the river and the reintroduced Big Five populations.
The southern highlands
Blantyre, Zomba plateau, Mount Mulanje and the tea estates of Thyolo.
The north
Mzuzu, the Nyika plateau, Vwaza Marsh and the Livingstonia mission above the escarpment.
Practical guide
Getting there
Kamuzu International at Lilongwe and Chileka at Blantyre take Ethiopian, Kenya Airways, South African and regional carriers. Overland from Zambia at Mchinji, Tanzania at Songwe and Mozambique at several crossings.
Getting around
AXA and other coach companies run the M1 between Blantyre, Lilongwe and Mzuzu. Minibuses fill the gaps. The Ilala ferry sails the length of the lake weekly, calling at Likoma — slow, unreliable and the best way to see it.
Money & costs
Kwacha in cash for nearly everything. Card acceptance is limited to city hotels. ATMs run out of money periodically. Bring US dollars as a fallback and change at a bank.
Safety
Low violent crime and a well-earned reputation for friendliness. Petty theft in Lilongwe's Old Town and around the lake resorts. Fuel shortages can strand a self-drive trip, so fill up whenever you can.
Health
Malaria year-round nationwide, including around the lake. Bilharzia in the lake — plan the praziquantel follow-up. Yellow fever certificate required from endemic countries. Medical facilities are limited; evacuation insurance is essential.
SIM & internet
TNM and Airtel; SIM registration requires a passport. 4G in the cities and along the lake shore; nothing in Nyika or the remoter parks. Data is expensive relative to income.
Driving
Left-hand traffic. The M1 is decent but shared with pedestrians, cyclists and goats. Never drive at night. Fuel availability is the real planning constraint — carry a jerrycan on long legs.

MalawiFrequently asked questions
Is bilharzia a problem in the lake?
It is present, and the honest answer is that risk varies by location and season — deep clear water away from reed beds is lower risk than shallow vegetated shoreline. Most long-term visitors swim and take a praziquantel course six to eight weeks afterwards, which is standard practice and effective. Discuss it with a travel clinic rather than relying on resort reassurance.
Do I need a 4x4?
Not for the main routes — the M1 spine and the roads to the lake resorts are tarmac. A 4x4 helps for Nyika, Nkhotakota and park tracks in the rains. Buses and minibuses cover the country cheaply, and the Ilala ferry still runs up the lake, which is a trip in itself.
How does the money work?
The kwacha was devalued sharply in 2023 and inflation has been high, so quoted prices age quickly. There have been recurrent fuel and foreign-currency shortages. Bring US dollars in cash, use ATMs in the cities while they have money, and do not assume a card will work outside Lilongwe and Blantyre.
