Advisory - travel not recommended · checked 5 Aug 2026
Foreign ministries advise against ALL travel to south-central Somalia, including Mogadishu, where al-Shabaab attacks occur regularly and there is effectively no consular assistance. Somaliland in the northwest issues its own visas, has been comparatively stable since 1991 and does receive visitors — an armed police escort is legally required outside Hargeisa. Standard scores are suspended while this alert is active.
Official advisory →“The longest coastline in mainland Africa, Laas Geel's rock art, and thirty years without a functioning centre.”
Somalia has the longest coastline of any mainland African country — 3,300 kilometres of Indian Ocean and Gulf of Aden — and a history as the Land of Punt, a trading civilisation the Egyptians recorded sailing to for incense. Laas Geel, outside Hargeisa, holds Neolithic rock paintings in colours that look barely faded after five thousand years, and they are among the best-preserved in Africa.
The country has not had an effective central government since 1991. Al-Shabaab controls or contests territory across the south and centre, Mogadishu experiences regular attacks, and every government advises against all travel to those regions. Somaliland in the northwest declared independence in 1991, is unrecognised internationally, has held elections and functions with its own currency and visa — and does receive a small number of visitors, with an armed escort required outside Hargeisa. Puntland sits between the two in both geography and stability.
Highlights
Laas Geel
Neolithic rock paintings under granite overhangs outside Hargeisa — cattle with lyre-shaped horns, human figures and dogs, painted perhaps 5,000 years ago and startlingly vivid. Among the best-preserved rock art in Africa.
Hargeisa
Somaliland's capital — the livestock market, the money changers stacking bricks of shillings in the open street, the MiG monument commemorating the 1988 bombardment, and a growing café and poetry scene.
Berbera and the Gulf of Aden
A Red Sea port with Ottoman-era buildings, empty white beaches and reefs that have barely been dived, on a coast where the summer heat is close to the limit of habitability.
Mogadishu
The Indian Ocean capital — Lido beach, the ruined cathedral, the old Italian quarter of Hamar Weyne and the Bakaara market. Under an against-all-travel advisory from every government.

Regions to know
5Somaliland
Hargeisa, Laas Geel, Berbera and the Sheikh mountains — self-declared independent since 1991 and the only part receiving visitors.
Puntland
Bosaso, Garowe and the Cape Guardafui headland at the tip of the Horn — semi-autonomous, and under advisory.
Mogadishu and Banaadir
The capital, Lido beach and the old Italian quarter. Against-all-travel advisory.
The riverine south
The Shabelle and Jubba valleys, Kismayo and the farmland between them — heavily contested.
The interior
The Haud plateau, the disputed Sool and Sanaag regions and the long Ethiopian frontier.
Practical guide
Getting there
Hargeisa Egal International is served by Ethiopian, Flydubai and regional carriers, mostly via Addis or Dubai. Mogadishu Aden Adde has Turkish, Ethiopian and Qatar service into a heavily secured airport compound. Overland from Ethiopia at Tog Wajaale is the usual Somaliland land route.
Getting around
In Somaliland, an SPU armed escort is required outside Hargeisa and is arranged through the tourism office — a fixed daily fee plus the officer's costs. Shared 4x4s cover the main routes. In the south, movement is by private security convoy only.
Money & costs
Mobile money is the default; cash US dollars for larger payments. No functioning card acceptance or ATMs for foreign cards. Bring dollars in good condition.
Safety
Al-Shabaab operates across the south and centre with regular attacks including on hotels; piracy has declined but persists offshore; and clan-based conflict recurs in disputed areas including the Sool and Sanaag regions between Somaliland and Puntland. Somaliland's core is comparatively stable. Read a current advisory for the specific region.
Health
Yellow fever certificate required from endemic countries. Malaria in the south and along the rivers. Cholera outbreaks recur. Medical facilities are minimal; specialist evacuation insurance is essential and difficult to obtain.
SIM & internet
Telesom in Somaliland, Hormuud in the south; SIMs are cheap and easy. Mobile data is surprisingly good and cheap in the cities — the telecoms sector is one of the country's functioning successes.
Driving
Visitors do not self-drive. In Somaliland, road travel outside Hargeisa legally requires an SPU escort. Alcohol is prohibited throughout.

SomaliaFrequently asked questions
Is Somaliland the same as Somalia for travel purposes?
Legally yes to the international community, practically no. Somaliland issues its own visas — a Somali visa is not valid there and vice versa — has its own currency and police, and has been comparatively stable since 1991. Visitors do go to Hargeisa and Berbera, with an armed police escort (an SPU officer) legally required for travel outside Hargeisa.
Can anyone visit Mogadishu?
A very small number of people do, staying inside the airport-adjacent secure zone with private security. Every government advises against all travel to south-central Somalia, al-Shabaab attacks occur regularly including at hotels used by foreigners, and there is effectively no consular assistance. This is not a destination in any ordinary sense.
How does the money work?
Mobile money — Zaad in Somaliland, EVC Plus in the south — dominates to an unusual degree, and many transactions of any size are done by phone. Cash US dollars are used for larger amounts. The Somaliland shilling exists physically in enormous bundles for small purchases. Foreign cards do not work.
