The Newest Marker Is Furthest From the Ice

Retreat has outrun the infrastructure built to show it: viewpoints of where a glacier was, approaches over unstable moraine, and a permafrost problem above the ice that has closed classic routes outright.

A glacier viewpoint built twenty years ago is now frequently a viewpoint of where a glacier was. Across the Alps, the Andes, the Rockies, Scandinavia and the Southern Alps of New Zealand, retreat has been fast enough to outrun the infrastructure built to show it, and the tourism that grew around ice is adapting in ways that are worth understanding before booking a trip built around one.

What has changed on the ground

Access has become harder, not easier, which is the opposite of what most visitors expect. Retreating ice leaves behind unstable moraine — loose, steep, freshly exposed ground with nothing holding it together — and the walk from the car park to the ice, once a few minutes on a made path, has in many places become a long approach over terrain the original path does not cross and cannot be extended across safely.

Several famous viewpoints have been closed, rerouted or extended repeatedly, and the signposts marking the ice front by year have quietly become the main exhibit. Where a cable car or a hut was built to serve a glacier tongue, the infrastructure is now stranded above or beside nothing, and the operators have had to decide whether to rebuild, reposition or reinterpret.

Guided access has tightened correspondingly. Ice that is thinning is ice that is changing faster: crevasse patterns shift within a season rather than over years, ice caves that were stable for a decade become unpredictable, snow bridges fail earlier in the day and earlier in the season, and the guiding operations that used to run summer walks onto low-angle tongues have in several cases moved onto helicopter access or stopped. Where an operator has restricted a route, the restriction is usually the result of something specific rather than caution in general.

The markers by the path used to be for scientists. They are now the main thing visitors photograph, and the newest one is always the furthest from the ice.

The permafrost problem

The less-discussed hazard is above the ice rather than on it. High mountain terrain is held together in part by permafrost — frozen ground acting as cement in the rock — and warming ground has produced a measurable increase in rockfall and slope failure across high alpine areas. This is not a slow background process; it produces discrete, large events, and several have destroyed huts, sections of via ferrata and classic climbing routes outright.

The consequence for visitors is that a route’s reputation is no longer a guide to its condition. Long-established alpine itineraries have been abandoned or reduced to early-season-only, hut wardens close approaches at short notice, and guiding companies have withdrawn from objectives they ran for a century. A guidebook published five years ago is a historical document about several of these.

Going anyway, and going well

Go with a current guide rather than a current guidebook — conditions information more than a season old is decorative, and the local guides’ office is the only source that knows what happened last week. Go early in the day and early in the season for anything involving snow bridges or rockfall exposure, since both hazards are strongly temperature-driven and both peak in the afternoon.

Take the local restriction seriously. A closed route in a mountain economy that depends on visitors was closed for a reason that cost somebody money, and the person who closed it has more information than you do. Do not walk onto glacier ice unroped and unguided regardless of how flat it looks; the crevasses under a snow cover are exactly the ones you cannot see.

And there is a defensible reason to go, worth stating against the obvious objection that this is disaster tourism. Retreat is legible at a glacier in a way it is nowhere else: a series of dated markers walking backwards down a valley is an argument that no chart makes as well, and it is an argument a person can walk along. The places that have leaned into this — interpreting the retreat rather than apologising for it, employing the guides whose routes have gone, funding the monitoring — offer something considerably more valuable than the view they used to sell.
